What is the Clery Act?

 

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the “Clery Act”) was passed in 1990. It is named in honor of Jeanne Clery. In 1986, Clery, who was a freshman at Pennsylvania’s Lehigh University, was raped and murdered in her dorm room by another student she didn’t know. The school had not disclosed to students that 38 violent crimes had occurred on the campus in the preceding three years. 

The Clery Act requires institutions who receive federal financial assistance to disclose their security policies, maintain a public crime log, publish an Annual Security Report, and provide timely warnings or emergency notifications to the campus community about situations posing an immediate or ongoing threat to students and campus employees. The Clery Act also requires institutions to provide victims of sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence or stalking with certain rights and resources.

When comparing crime at OSU to other institutions of similar size, you'll find OSU's crime rate to be one of the lowest in the Big 12.
The crime and arrest statistics reported here are those which occurred within the jurisdictional boundaries of campus. They do not include off-campus organizations or off-campus private housing, which are within the jurisdiction of the Stillwater Police Department. Crime statistics concerning these locations or areas are available at the SPD.

These reports are provided as required by the Clery Act. In addition to the Annual Safety Report, the OSU Police Department also keeps crime statistics for incidents that occur within the OSU Police Department’s jurisdiction.

Guide for Campus Security Authorities

While all members of the Oklahoma State University community are encouraged to report crimes to the OSU Police Department, certain individuals known as Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) are required to report certain crimes which occurred on campus, in public areas surrounding campus, and in certain non-campus buildings owned or leased by OSU. All CSAs are required to complete annual training.
